The IIHS tests vehicles to see how they protect their occupants during the event of a crash. The IIHS is one of the leading organizations producing research on the leading crash test. Watch as the 2013 Volvo XC60 undergoes a crash test.  The purpose of a crash dummy is to demonstrate how well the car protects an occupant during a crash and it shows how external forces would lead to injury of passengers in a crash.

The 2013 Volvo XC60, Sport Utility Vehicle was tested by the IIHS. Before the crash test the XC60 is checked/documented on its pre-crash state. The vehicle then goes into the prepping area where the fluids are emptied. The purpose of supervising the pre-crash condition of the structure of the 2013 Volvo XC60 is so that it can be analyzed after the effects of the crash.

Right before the crash the 2013 XC60 is put in a Temperature controlled shed – grease and paint are put on the dummies head and knees so after they can be documented where the head has come in contact vs the airbag, etc. The last step, dummy is positioned in the Volvo XC60 and the car is then crashed on forceful impact.

After this dramatic test, an ideal situation is to be able to see that the airbag, belts and safety cage are all still in tact. This outcome will show that low risk of injury and the 2013 Volvo XC60 SUV’s structure has held up well.

The focus of the IIHS as well as Volvo is protecting occupants during crashes.  With improving technology a focus has also been put on vehicles that can help occupants avoid a crash all together.
